Sables can be bright red to heavily shaded. Usually, but not always, the
heavily shaded sables are either bi or tri factored.

Blue Merle
A blue merle is a black dog that got the diluted gene to make them a blue
color. The blue merle has tan and white markings. They can be bred to
black or sable dogs although it is preferred that they only be bred to black
dogs. You should NOT breed a blue to a blue unless you know what your doing!!
They can result in double merles (look below).

Same as the blue merle above except they have no tan markings

Color headed white
The color headed white comes from breeding two white factored dogs. Unlike
whites in many other breeds, white in shelties are normal in every way, but they
are not accepted by the AKC standard to be shown in conformation. UKC now allows
them and hopefully other registries will follow.

Sable Merle
Comes from breeding a sable to a blue. Most sable merles loose their
merling by the time they are adults.

Double Merle
Comes from breeding two merles together. They can be blind, deaf and
sometimes are born with other problems. It is NOT recommended to breed two blues
unless you know what your doing. Notice that with the double merle they have no
coloring on their head where the color headed white has color mostly on their
head.
